“Being in the Welcome Center is the best job ever. You meet all these great new people, and you get to help them out, too. A definite plus.”
Cutting the cord. Leaving the nest. Splitting for the Coast. When the time comes to go out into the world, you just know. That’s how it was for Kelsey Boucher. And when you call her, you’re ringing a number in Washington, DC. “What happened was that my aunt called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to college in California. And I just told her, ‘Oh yeah!’ ”
Now in her third semester of studies at SMC, Kelsey talks about her future. “So far, I’ve just been concentrating on my general education courses. But I really want to major in Psychology. I don’t know exactly where that will take me,” she continues, “but I’d like to think that I could be involved in some sort of counseling. And hey! I already get to do that at the Welcome Center! So I’m already getting a lot of hands-on experience. I get to help students with their enrollment, and help them to get the classes and resources they need. But I also help them find out how to learn all about being a good student, as well.”
Kelsey urges SMC students to be open to any and all classroom experiences. “Like right now, I just started a night class. It’s Math 31, and it’s excellent. My teacher? Ms. Ward? She is the best! She just makes everything so crystal clear. You know how some professors can be confusing? But in her class, ‘Oh, no, this is the only way to do it; this is how it all gets done, and just forget about anything else,’ is what it’s always about.” When asked if she missed DC at all, Kelsey giggled and said, “Maybe a little. But now, it’s just me and the world.”
