“I really didn’t know anything about what I wanted to do when I got here. But I got into Counseling 12 [Career Planning], and it totally helped me to make my decision.”

“Yeah, Career Planning was really a great class for me, because I was really confused,” admits Monica Francois. “I was like, ‘OK. I am out of high school. Now what?’ And then I met Ron Brewington , who I interviewed for my final counseling project, and he gave me a lot of wise words and knowledge. He really inspired me to do this. He’s just a great teacher—and funny!—and I would recommend his classes to anyone.”

Monica insists that career counseling is the way to go for a lot of students. “You take these tests, and you learn a lot about yourself and all the different careers that are available. It just opened my mind to broadcasting,” she says. “Suddenly I realized that this isn’t some sort of far-off dream. It’s actually something that’s right here for me to do, and I can do it.” Despite her first confused days at SMC, Monica has arrived at certainty about what her future holds. “I’m in an entire program now where we run a radio station, and I get to create a one-hour broadcast every week. It’s mostly just radio at the moment,” she says. “But now we’re getting to work on-camera with Teleprompters, and that is always a rush. So I know that I’m doing the right thing.”

Monica states, “I do want to be more than just a ‘talking head’ who just reads the news. So I’m going to need to study journalism, as well, so that I can create my own stories.” But no matter what people plan on studying, she says they should all make the Counseling classes Priority #1. “I mean, I have friends at universities who still don’t know what they’re doing, and that’s not at all the case with me.”
