“One of the best things about SMC is that it’s very clean. And I really appreciate it that the College now has a no-smoking policy.”
You don’t get much more of an Irish name than Patrick Fitzmorris. And as befits his heritage, Patrick has involved himself in two pursuits at SMC for which the Irish are justly famous: music and the English language. “I’m a freshman here, but I’m already loving it,” he says, “I’m studying English, but I’ve also got three music classes. I wouldn’t say music is a passion of mine: It’s more of a hobby. But I’ve got two performing classes; one where I play trombone in a group, and one where I’m singing.” But it’s Patrick’s third music class that he regards as a standout.
“I have Mr. Martin for my Music Appreciation class, and he’s a great guy who really knows his stuff. He has incredible knowledge about the history of music, and he’s got a great sense of humor, so his classes are always lively.” Patrick states, “Though I’m not yet sure, I’m leaning toward some sort of career in engineering or the science areas. That might not seem to make much sense with all the music I’m taking,” he acknowledges with a cheery laugh, “but I just didn’t want to take all the science and math classes in my first semester. And I think that’s probably good, because I’ll be refreshed when I get back into it.”
Patrick advises, “The way to make the best use of your time here is to
really
study ways to get around on campus. Make a study of exactly what is where. And you should also make yourself known to your professors,” he adds. “You don’t have to become best buddies with them, but you should get to know them as much as possible.”
