Don Wilson

Video Editing/Academy of Entertainment & Technology

“To me, SMC is a godsend. You’d have to go to USC or UCLA to get the kind of services you get here.”

Learning is just a vital thing that gets into your blood, if you let it. And for Don Wilson, it’s a crucial step to take as he continues to adapt, grow, and explore new fields. “I attended SMC back in the ’80s, but now—because I’ve switched fields—I’m a returning student. I’ve been to other colleges,” he says, “but there’s really nothing like the curriculum and the academic standards here. They’re just top notch.”

In past ‘incarnations,’ Don has worn many hats and has always been able to successfully morph into new creative endeavors. “I started in broadcasting,” he says in a voice that leaves no doubt about that credential. “Then I had a hip hop video show in the late ’90s, and I discovered that outsourcing all the editing made for a pretty big tab,” he says with a laugh. “So now I’m pursuing editing at SMC’s Academy of Entertainment & Technology, so that whatever I want to realize and bring to life, I can just do it myself.” But he is definitely not without help in his latest foray into making a new ‘Don Wilson.’

“I’ve studied with guys here like Warren Heaton and Eric Gerds. And these guys have all been working pros in the media, so they really know their stuff when it comes to helping you get where you need to go. What they’ve done is to show me the entire flow of production in all phases of the business, so that I’ll be aware of my environment—no matter what it might be—in the future.” Don says that “SMC is a great place for older students to come to, because you get equal opportunity to express yourself, learn, and pursue your dreams and desires.”
