“The AS really wants newbies because we’ve got a lot of new ideas. So getting involved with them was a really great choice, and I’d recommend it to anybody.”
She was brand new to SMC, but Sharna Horn—a “California city girl!”—was wasting no time in discovering all the benefits that the AS offers students. “I’m the Commissioner of Academic Support, and it’s a great experience, because I get to help the school, and help myself as well,” says Sharna. “When you start out in college, you tend to feel isolated and alone and confused. But being in the AS helps me know how the school functions. Plus, I get meet a lot of really great people. I just feel like I ’m established here somehow.”
Sharna reports, “I have two passions: literature and fashion. I could end up studying English. But who knows? Maybe I’ll find a way to do both of the things I love. Right now, I’m just trying to figure out what to do with my life.” But SMC has made Sharna’s search for direction a very fruitful one. “This school has such great facilities and professors that I’d recommend it to everyone. I’ve even heard that the sciences are better here than at UCLA. And I can believe it!” she says with a laugh. “They’re
brutal!”
But when not being ‘brutalized’ by SMC’s vaunted science classes, Sharna has found time for other studies that she says are a real joy. “I found my incredible English teacher—Lawrence Driscoll—through
ratemyprofessor.com, where someone had said they’d taken a course from him a few years back at USC. He’s so animated! But he also wants all of us to understand everything. So he does everything he can—including after class—to help you along. And he’s also hysterically funny,” says Sharma. “And that really helps at 8 o’clock in the morning.”
