Marce Kelly

Marce Kelly

Professor

“It’s the students themselves that I love most about SMC. There’s so much diversity, and there’s nobody who doesn’t have an amazing story.”

Five-year-old twins and an eight-year-old would seem to be enough of a ‘career’ for a lot of people. But not for Marce Kelly, who is just firing up her second year at SMC. “This is my dream job!” she said with real enthusiasm. “People are coming here from every corner of the world, and they don’t yet value their own experiences, cultures, or even their intellects. So one of my goals is to give them a sense of their own value as well as the value of their colleagues. And I get to do this every day? C’mon…. That’s a dream job!”

Marce is in the business of serious Business. “When I got my MBA way back in the ‘dark ages’—1986—I went straight to work in a lot of large corporations,” she reports. “So I bring a lot of real-world experience to my classes. But more importantly, I want to give my students better communications and teamwork skills and to help them be better critical thinkers, regardless of the topic.” ‘In the beginning was the word’, and Marce states that nothing in business is as important as just that.

“Business Communication is completely my favorite class because people come in there with real fear, but they come out able to write and speak with confidence,” she says. “Those are skills they can take with them wherever they go in the world. And it’s pure pleasure to give them that and then place them in careers, internships, business schools… whatever it is that’s going to be their next step.”
