“Students
who only get advice from their friends are only getting a little
piece of the story. If you come to see us, we can lay out the
whole ‘grand plan’ for you.”
Any time
you’re beginning something new, it’s important to take
the right first step. And according to Robin Smith, that first
step at SMC should be straight to the Counseling office. “People
resist coming to see us. And I can almost understand why,”
she says. “Students think that we’re like high school
counselors who—at least in my experience—didn’t
care at all. But that’s just not how it is here,” she
emphasizes. “We work very hard to give our students every
advantage and resource we can possibly make available to them.”
Robin has
a long list of SMC services that, when taken advantage of, can
mean quick progress, more success in studies, money, and a lot
more fun and fulfillment during your days here. “Where do
I even start?” she says. “We run workshops in career
choices and how to fill out UC and Cal State applications. We
can help you create your transfer plan and make sure you stay
on track. We provide tutoring, which nowhere near enough students
are utilizing. And we’ve got planning guides that explain
all the services here—from psychological counseling to women’s
issues. And we can also tell you about all the clubs, social activities,
and student government.”
Robin and
her colleagues are on the lookout for you, so don’t think
you’re alone. “Working people who have to come for night
classes are a huge part of this campus. But they seem too often
be ‘loners.’ And we want them to know, ‘Hey! We
know you’re there. Come on in and see us because we can help!’”
SMC Academic
Counselor Robin Smith began full-time at SMC in Fall ’99.
Welcome!
