“Come
to the Latino Center and get your two-year plan in order! Oscar
Galindo was my counselor, and he started me on the way.”
It was nail-biting
time for Felicia Gomez as she waited for ‘the word.’
“I’m still holding out for transfer to LMU," she said
anxiously. “But if I don’t make it there, then it’ll
be Cal State Dominguez Hills.” But
wherever she ends up, one thing was very clear in her mind.
“After four years here, it’s definitely time
for me to move on,” said the young woman who has quite nearly
made a ‘career’ at the Latino Center as a student worker.
“School full-time and working two jobs to pay the bills has
been okay. But I’m really ready to go,” she said with
a laugh.
Felicia reports
that she’s “going into Liberal Arts so that I can be
an elementary teacher. I want to give something back, because
my experience in school at that age was all very excellent. And
I feel that’s the time in life when people need good teachers
more than ever.” Felicia
also reports many good experiences during her time at SMC. “I’ve
done so much good networking here: It’s how I got my job
at the Latino Center. And I’ve also been a dancer with the
Folklorico de SMC, which I’m planning to stay with even after
I leave. It’s just something I’ll always love.”
Of the teachers
that have had the strongest impact on Felicia, she cites “Christina
Preciado in Sociology and Karen Gunn in Psychology. But there
have been so many good teachers here, and they’ve
all helped me to improve scholastically and become more serious.
If you come here acting foolishly,” she adds, “you’ll
soon see that change quickly. At SMC, it’s time to
grow up.”
