“I
just wish I’d been this passionate about college when I was
younger. I’m fascinated by learning, and by the people at
SMC.”
Everybody
needs a little break now and then from studying. Steve Craig’s
break was just a little longer than most. “I was here back
in 1981, but I left to go to work. I had a career, went through
a divorce, and now I’m back here in full swing,” says
Steve. “I felt I needed to do something good for myself,
so I started off with photography. And it all just ‘clicked’
And now I’m a photo major and shooting for the Corsair.”
After a career in broadcast operations and video repair, Steve
reports having felt a little unfulfilled. “But working for
the paper has given me a real sense of fun,” he says. “I
like being around a lot of creative people working towards a deadline,
and our advisor, Barbara Baird, is just wonderful. I’m beginning
to think I could go to work for a magazine some day,” he
continues. “But right now I just feel very good about doing
some work for the school and being involved.”
Steve hopes
his new sense of involvement is going to take him into new realms
of electronic creativity at SMC’s Academy of Entertainment
and Technology, slated to open this fall. “I’m really
pumped about this new Academy at SMC,” says Steve. “I
just bought a Mac, and now I’m playing around with Photoshop.
I’m really interested in the digital side of imaging, and
I love working with computers. From what I hear about the Academy,”
he says, “what they’re going to be offering in the way
of programs pretty much defines the ‘cutting edge’ of
technology and art.”
After his
hiatus of 16 years, Steve reports feeling “nothing but positive”
about SMC. “It’s good to be back here and moving towards
a new career,” he says. “Whatever I end up doing now
is going to be something I enjoy, because we all gotta work. And
it might as well be time spent doing something fun.”
