“If
I don’t make it as an actress, it’s okay. Just as long
as I’m happy and always manage to learn something new.”
I’m
going to audition for the lead in A Shot in the Dark, which
is the summer play at the Theater department. And I’ve got
my hopes up,” says Nava Plotsky, who was “born in Israel
and born to act.” Nava has immersed herself in the studies
she hopes will lead to a career in films. “I’ve taken
every acting class that SMC offers,” she says. “And
every teacher has been hard and demanding, but never judgmental.
I’ve learned a lot from every teacher here, and I hope to
put it all to use when I audition for Julliard next year. All
things in their own time.” But there was a time when nothing
moved fast enough for Nava.
“I dropped
out of high school because I couldn’t see how chemistry was
going to help my acting career,” she says. “I got my
GED and came straight to SMC. And since then, I’ve learned
to be a little patient with myself and persistent, especially
in my studying. My parents,” she continues, “really
want me to have another career path to fall back on. But acting
is what I want to do with my life, and I won’t feel really
good about myself unless I give it everything I’ve got. There’s
a transformation that happens when you perform,” she continues.
“For a while, you become someone else. That’s the beauty
of it.”
Nava heads
home for Israel most summers to be with family, and reports, “In
spite of all you hear, it’s very safe and a woman can walk
in the street in total darkness and not worry. But L.A. is the
place for what I really want to do. And if my timing is right…,”
she says, laughing, “I might consider doing a movie
with Gary Oldman.”
