“A
lot of things that have been dormant are just exploding. This
all feels like a real renaissance for me.”
She is a
free spirit who feels that she’s been locked away for a number
of years and is now in the process of reinventing herself at SMC.
“The teachers here are great at helping you explore your
potentials,” says Judi Brewer. “When I went to college
years ago, I missed taking the journalism classes. So I’ve
had about 30 years of writing tucked away in the closet. And then
I started taking journalism classes here. And a course in writing
reviews I had with Barbara Baird got my work published in the
Corsair. It was a simple little step,” she continues, “but
it led on to so much that has happened since.”
Judi, who
got her BS in education in 1969, parlayed her initial writings
at SMC into a challenging editorial job. “I’m a section
editor for a magazine on government, health and education,”
she reports. “And since starting to work there, I’ve
also begun to really take advantage of the graphic arts classes
at SMC. I do so much work on the Macintosh,” she adds, “and
these classes will help me to be more savvy and to put together
a magazine with a really fresh, creative look.”
Judi says
there were a few jitters to overcome before returning to the classroom.
“When I first walked into class, I felt a little out of place,”
she recalls. “But I quickly found out that lots of people
are returning to school. And actually, I really like the perspective
that I have on learning after having been out in the world for
a few years.”
Judi says
that in five years, “I’d like to be publishing books
and be involved in film; communicating in a large capacity. I
consider myself an educator in all my activities,” she says.
“And SMC has been a great place to plug in all my energies.”
