“It’s
amazing how much help is available here if you’re just willing
to ask the right question.”
Virigina
McCrum has been at SMC since the summer of 1989 and has nearly
figured a way to make it a four-year school. “I’ve actually
graduated but I’m taking my last GE’s to transfer to
Antioch,” says Virginia. “And after I get my degree,
I plan to come back for all the ‘fun’ classes—acting,
music, etc.—and if I take them,” she says with a laugh,
“I figure it’ll be about another two years.”
Virginia
has been a near fixture in the offices of The Corsair during
her time at SMC. She handled stints as the news, the features
and the opinion editor before finally becoming co-editor-in-chief
in her last semester. “Working at The Corsair has
inspired me to get into journalism,” says Virginia, who is
already senior editor with a local magazine. “And I have
to say that Charles Donaldson was the absolute best teacher: I
learned everything I know from him including writing, paste-up,
layout and design.”
Virginia
says that SMC students should really make a concerted effort to
utilize all the resources available to them. “I recommend
that as soon as a students gets on campus, they should visit all
the services, like Financial Aid and Counseling, and really plan
ahead. And getting involved in extra-curricular things will get
you in touch with teachers, students and deans,” she continues,
“who will really make you feel a part of the school.”
Virginia has a lot of fond feelings for the campus where she’s
worn so many hats. “But I think I’ll treasure, above
all, the study abroad program,” she says. “It was an
enlightening trip for me which also led me to discover my husband.”
