“From
what I see, it’s always the strongest who do well. The poor
always suffer.”
Her kids
are squealing with delight in the background. “We just came
from swimming practice,” says Claudie Worth in the soft lilt
of her native French. “And one of them now is pulling on
the telephone cord. Ah, but I am the stronger!” she says
with a laugh.
Claudie’s
road to SMC began with a vacation in California years ago. “And
then, when I came back again to visit my friend, she set me up
with a blind date,” she recalls. “And now I’ve
been married to that blind date for nine years.” She acknowledges
that the French do have a certain flair for romance. “But
the Americans are not so bad with it either.”
Claudie is
currently studying “all the options available” for a
new career launch. “I was a pastry chef and had reached the
maximum of what I could be paid,” she says. “So I want
to find a balance; to make a career that will let me spend time
with my kids. So I’m taking Maggie LeDuc’s class in
Human Development,” she says. “And she is so enthusiastic
and prepared. She has given us all five pounds of reading, at
least.”
Claudie feels
that a non-traditional field may provide her with the challenge
she needs in her life. “I think engineering will be good
for me because I would like to compete in the kind of work that
is usually male-oriented.” But then, changing the stereotypes
of society in general is something Claudie feels very passionately
about.
“There’s
so much that needs changing,” she says. “Healthcare.
Politics. In France,” she adds, “people feel that their
country truly belongs to them. Here, there are only two parties.
Only two!”
