“Don’t
think SMC is as relaxed as it sometimes sounds. It’s a lot
of hard work and elbow grease.”
If anybody
ever made a run at exhausting the possibilities at SMC, it just
might be Reut Ness: English major, Dale Ride intern, photojournalist,
study abroad student, writer, environmentalist and…well,
you get the picture.
“It’s
time for me to move on,” says Reut who in fact will soon
be interning for Senator Joseph Biden’s office in Washington.
“And hopefully I’ll be able to hop over to the Democratic
convention in New York so I can photograph it.” You will
see some of Reut’s photographs in this schedule of classes.
“Being an SMC photographer is great!” she says of her
work for staff photographer John Samargis. “We got first
crack at Stephen Hawking when he was here. And all the media were
still waiting outside.” Reut’s photos are possibly the
only thing about her that stays still for very long.
“I went
to Guildford, England, and studied Shakespeare, politics, geography
and geology,” says Reut, adding to her list of intense interests.
“And then I went backpacking by myself in Europe where I
absolutely fell in love with Italy. It’s been tugging at
my heart ever since.”
But another
thing that’s been tugging at Reut is the environmental mess
and how to fix it. “The fact that the U.S. is thinking of
not going to Rio for the Earth Summit is preposterous,” she
says. “We’re really out of touch if we think we can
turn the whole world down.” Reut’s plans include a transfer
to UC Santa Cruz “to study in their environmental school.
And then it’s on to Yale Law School. I like the way that
sounds!” Clear the decks, Yale. Reut is on her way and she’s
not going to let you rest on your ivy.
