Bill Price

Professor

“It’s nice to be part of a great college. And I think that’s what SMC is.”

In whatever Bill Price does, there always seems to be a lot of “legwork” involved. He works full-time in medical insurance sales and marketing which requires dashing off to meetings. And running has become a compulsion. “I feel my legs get stronger all the time.” Then, to “relax” this summer, “I went backpacking,” he says, pausing for effect. “Up to the top of Mt. Whitney.”

Keeping the incredible machine that is the human body in good shape is important to Bill Price, physiologist and athlete. “There’s no panacea for good health,” he says. “But exercise comes as close to being one as anything. And the more research we do about it, the more benefits we see.”

Bill, who started teaching at SMC in 1970, spent eight years teaching at the USC School of Medicine. “But now I find teaching and sales work is a combination that gives me a lot of freedom.” Still, teaching is something he feels he’ll always be devoted to. “I like teaching at SMC and the environment here is great. Our department of life science typifies what’s good about it.”

Bill’s interest in the quality of SMC life in general has placed him on the Academic Senate, “for a couple of years. And now I’m on the Faculty Association.” He points proudly to the fact that “SMC sends more students to the UC system than all the schools in the L.A. District combined. And I guess you’d have to say,” he adds, “that’s simply because of the quality of education here.”
