“I
always knew I wanted to be an actress. I haven’t even tried
anything else.”
For Bridget
Perrin, the line from Shakespeare—“All the world is
a stage,”—has taken on literal meaning. “I’m
performing every day of my life,” says the 19-year-old theatre
arts major, explaining with a chuckle, “I walk around campus
screaming and people look at me. I love it.”
But in her
approach to her chosen career as an actress, Bridget has a very
serious side. Acting and dancing performances throughout high
school gave her the basis for advanced training at SMC, where
she has taken acting classes, stage craft, theater management,
lighting and costuming. “I have found the teachers to be
so dedicated to their work. They’re putting in so much time
to help the students,” says Bridget, recalling how intimidated
she first felt working with power tools in her stage craft class.
“But they took the time to show me exactly how to do it,”
she says, referring to her instructors Vickie Scott and Michael
Tomko.
To get an
even broader perspective on the theater, Bridget spends nine hours
a week working in the costume shop. “I wanted a job in the
theater,” she says, “and no matter whether it’s
in lighting or costumes or another area, I learn so much about
acting.”
SMC may well
prove to have been a stepping stone. Bridget, who has appeared
in four SMC Main Stage productions, now has her first agent and
is tirelessly auditioning. And she has just been cast for the
lead in a student film and also in a music video.
