SMC Places 3rd in National Math Contest, Sets Record

Santa Monica College has finished in 3rd place out of 184 community colleges in the 2006-07 national Student Math League competition, believed to be the highest finish for the college since the contest began in 1970.

The SMC team was powered by outstanding mathematicians. Alexandre Boulgakov, a Santa Monica High School junior who has taken courses at SMC, finished 3rd nationally among 1,918 students in the individual competition. Chan Ieong Kuan, in his second year at SMC, finished 5th nationally.

The Student Math League competition – in which students are given multiple choice and written exams – is sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

Altogether, 130 students from SMC participated in the math league.

“I am very proud of our students,” said math professor William Konya. “Their strong results show that the students in mathematics at Santa Monica College do outstanding work.”
