“SOMEWHERE IN L.A. ” BOOK & EXHIBIT OF SMC STUDENT PHOTOS
FOR GETTY PROJECT TO BE UNVEILED APRIL 28
“Somewhere in L.A.,” a book of photos taken by 10 Santa Monica College students as part of a unique project with the J. Paul Getty Museum, will be unveiled at an artists' reception from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The reception will be held at A&I Photographic and Digital Services, 1550 17th St., Santa Monica.
Copies of the book – which feature images taken throughout Los Angeles – will be available for sale for $20, or $15 for students. Proceeds from sales of the book will go to the SMC Photography Department.
The reception Saturday will also serve as an opening for an A&I exhibit of the student photographs that will be held indefinitely. To make an appointment to view the exhibit (other than during the opening reception), please call (310) 264-2622.
The book and exhibit have emerged from a special project undertaken last fall by the Getty in Brentwood in which students from four Los Angeles area community colleges – including SMC – studied with prominent American photographers.
Working with renowned photographer Alex Harris, the SMC students took pictures of Venice and other parts of Los Angeles , and the resulting images are being incorporated into the A&I book and exhibit.
Meanwhile, a 40-piece show of the students' work from all four colleges – SMC, Los Angeles Valley College, East Los Angeles College and College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita – has been touring the four campuses. The exhibit is scheduled to reach SMC in September 2007.
The SMC students are Erika Alghafari, Patricia Alpizar, Fabiola Arias, Eleanore Atkins, Nelson Castro, Jessica Domino, Shannon Donnelly, Kyösti Kauppinen, Sarah St. Clair Renard, and Moira Stinocher.
