SMC RECEIVES $250,000 GRANT TO OPEN
SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Santa Monica College announced it has received a $250,000 grant to establish a Small Business Development Center for the Westside that will begin to offer services by the end of February.

The center – which will offer workshops and advice to entrepreneurs and start-up businesses – will be located in a City of Santa Monica-owned facility at 3400 Airport Ave. at Santa Monica Airport.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to work with the City of Santa Monica and meet the needs of businesses in the area,” said Marvin Martinez, who oversees SMC’s Office of Workforce and Economic Development.

The grant will allow the new center to offer 50 workshops each year on such topics as writing a business plan, accessing capital, marketing and sales techniques, and e-commerce. In addition, the center will be able to provide advice to business owners.

Many of the services will be provided on the Internet for the convenience of busy entrepreneurs. Already the center has established a website http://www.smc.edu/workforcedevelopment/sbdc.htm. Web presence is particularly important because of the large geographic area that the center will serve, stretching from Malibu to Hollywood and from Inglewood to Sherman Oaks.

The grant money came from two sources – $200,000 from the Small Business Administration and $50,000 from the California Community Colleges’ Chancellor’s Office.
