SMC’S PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH GOES INTO HIGH GEAR

The recruitment of a new Santa Monica College president is well under way, with the deadline for applications, Sept. 30, fast approaching.

The college has cast its net nationally, through a combination of mailings, use of email lists, and advertising in a variety of publications, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, Asian Week, ispanic Outlook in Higher Education and Black Careers.

The Presidential Search Committee – made up of SMC employees, students and Santa Monica and Malibu community members – has established a tentative schedule for the next steps in the process, contingent on an adequate pool of qualified candidates.

In October, the committee will screen applications and interview candidates for the position. It will then select three to five candidates to be forwarded to the Board of Trustees.

During the week of Nov. 14 through 18, each of the finalists will come to campus – one finalist each day – for open public forums and closed-door interviews with the board.

As early as Dec. 5, the date of a regularly scheduled board meeting, the new president could be announced.
The search for a new president began early this year after Piedad F. Robertson left the chief executive position to take the presidency of Denver-based Education Commission of the States.
