SMC STUDENTS BIG WINNERS IN
Santa Monica College students have captured more than one-third of all the awards in the college division of the 2003 Los Angeles County Fair Photography Exhibit – billed as the largest photo show in North America.
In addition, images by SMC students make up about 40 percent of the images selected for the college division portion of the show, which represents the work of students from universities and colleges throughout California. Of the 195 photographs in the college-division display, 75 are by SMC students.
Altogether, eight SMC students won first-, second-, or third-place awards in the fair's college division and captured an additional nine honorable mentions.
The Los Angeles County Fair’s 2003 New Photography Exhibit opens today (Sept. 12) and runs through Sept. 28 at the Fairground’s Millard Sheets Gallery in Pomona.
The SMC winners were Jacquie Beaubien, first place in the close-ups category; Thomas Feucht-Haviar, first place, scenic; Raul Vasquez, second place. life studies and black-and-white; Andrea Oliviera, third place, fine art; and Tania Fallert, Ethan Pines, and Janice Yim in a three-way tie for third place in life studies.
Winning honorable mentions were Emily Baker, Marguerite Courtney, Alden Desoto, Richard Frinta, Sara Hakan, Martin Lingnau, Gloria Stenzel-Santamaria, Patty Wiliford, and Michael Witcher.
In addition, three SMC alumni captured eight
awards or honorable mentions in the open division.
