POPE APPOINTED TO SMC BOARD OF
TRUSTEES FOR ONE YEAR
Graham Pope – a certified public accountant and business leader
with extensive ties to Santa Monica College – was appointed Monday
(Nov. 3) to the college’s Board of Trustees for a one-year term.
After an extensive search and application process,
the SMC Board of Trustees selected Pope from among five finalists to fill
the unexpired term of former Trustee Patrick Nichelson, who resigned effective
Sept. 30. Pope, a Santa Monica resident, was sworn into office after the
trustees voted on the selection.
“A great honor has been bestowed upon me,”
Pope said. “I want to make sure all college constituencies understand
I’m interested in dialogue.”
Pope’s affiliation with the college goes back almost a decade. He
is immediate past president and a board member of the SMC Foundation,
SMC’s private fundraising organization, and is chair of SMC’s
Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, which oversees the college’s
implementation of Measure U, the 2002 bond approved by Santa Monica-Malibu
voters. Pope will resign from those organizations, effective immediately.
He was also treasurer of the Measure U campaign committee and served on
SMC’s 1995 Presidential Search Committee. He has also served on
the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Budget Advisory Committee
and is a member of the Rotary Club.
Past president and a current board member of the Santa Monica Chamber
of Commerce, Pope is a certified public accountant with his own firm in
West Los Angeles who has had more than 30 years of accounting experience
in the United States and Canada.
Pope received his bachelor’s degree in
business administration from the University of Western Ontario in Canada
and a master’s of science in taxation from Golden Gate University
in San Francisco.
