Foundation Awards $60,000 in "Margin of Excellence" Grants to Professors
The SMC Foundation has awarded nearly $60,000 in 17 "Margin of Excellence" mini-grants for 2012-13 to professors for equipment and materials ranging from animal skulls to printed piano music to computers and software. Above is anatomy professor Sandra Hutchinson, whose grant will get her several sets of disarticulated human skeleton models. >>

An African president's funeral. Performing at the Queen's Jubilee. A Star Wars convention. These are some of the stories we got from employees who had unusual summers. This summer SMC sent 17 employees and two trustees on a two-week lecture/cultural tour of Beijing and Inner Mongolia. One of the participants, film professor Salvador Carrasco, collected from his fellow travelers a series of stunning images that he put together in a lovely slide show with music.
Reyes First Recipient of Business Dept. Gratitude Award
Miguel Reyes, telecommunications technician, is the winner of the SMC Business Department's inaugural Annual Gratitude Award. Above, he is with business professor Marcella Kelly, who came up with the idea for the award. >>

Check out the trailer of this compelling short film by Dustin Brown, made in a film production class at SMC and winner of two awards, including the President's Award, in the spring SMC Global Citizenship Symposium. "Becoming" has been selected for the prestigious Los Angeles Shorts Film Fest, and will screen Sept. 13 in North Hollywood.
