Welcome to AGS Website!

Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) is the statewide community college honor society. It is similar to Phi Beta Kappa in four-year colleges across the United States. Its purpose is to foster, promote, maintain, and recognize excellence in scholastic achievement as well as to provide the campus and community with service-oriented activities. Founded by Dr. William T. Boyce in 1925, Alpha Gamma Sigma has grown into a statewide system of honor society chapters that regularly honor their members through scholastic awards and provide other incentives toward intellectual achievement and community service. Alpha Gamma Sigma is one of the most prestigious of all student organizations.

It offers opportunities for cultural, social, and enrichment experiences. Some of the advantages and benefits of being a part of Alpha Gamma Sigma are:

  • Recognition of Permanent Members at graduation ceremonies.
  • Record of Alpha Gamma Sigma membership on your student transcript.
  • Inter-Community College Enterprise in Scholastic Achievement.
  • Opportunities to receive scholarship and other recognition awards.
  • Participation in Alpha Gamma Sigma Regional Conferences and statewide conventions with other colleges.

The organization is run entirely by its student members and is committed to providing services to our surrounding communities. Our members participate in various events from cleaning the beaches with Heal the Bay to raising money for AIDS research in the annual AIDS Walk. We provide free tutoring services, help serve meals to the homeless, and donate blood to the American Red Cross. We promote a yearly youth event, Peace and Harmony Day, which promotes non-violence. Hours are spent collecting toys and food during holidays in hopes that the less fortunate can share in the holiday joy. Each year, many members attend the annual Alpha Gamma Sigma State Conference that cultivates their leadership skills.

We encourage you to consider joining Alpha Gamma Sigma at Santa Monica College because if you can meet the primary requirements, it will definitely be worth your time!
